On Jan, 3rd 2008 the PHP development team deployed the last patches to the PHP 4.4 series.

PHP 4 is dead, long live PHP 5!

I personally never used PHP 4. Three years back I jumped from 3 directly to 5 and never regretted it.
I consider PHP 4 to be an important intermediate to finally introduce OOP to PHP.
